He thought about it for a long time. “Palestine,” he said finally. “The Zionists say one day Jews will have their own country there. Can you imagine it? Somewhere we wouldn’t be foreigners any more. Where being called a Jew wasn’t an insult? Somewhere they couldn’t take anything away from us ever again?”

“Do you believe in God, Sarah?”

“I’m Jewish, aren’t I?”

“Do you?”

“Well, you know. Sometimes.”

“If there was a God, how could there be an Auschwitz?”
